The Castle of the Ampurdán formerly known as Castillo de Llaneras is a historical monument of the municipality of La Bisbal in the Baix Empordà.
History of the fortress begins when it was erected at the end of the 13th century. The nucleus of the Castle of Ampurdán, formerly denominated Llaneres, was frontier position of the county of Ampurias opposite the county of Gerona, of real dominion, and Bisbal, of episcopal dominion. The castle was built as a defensive site for the southern sector of the county in the late thirteenth century by Count Ponce V of Ampurias and given in fief to Guillem de Vilagut in the year 1301.
From the first years of the 15th century until the end of the 18th century the lords of the castle were the Margarit.
The fortress is a large house with an old square tower and the rest made the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. It has however, Gothic elements taken advantage of. It is a large building, which consists of two bodies at right angles, and retains few elements of the original work, as it currently offers the whole aspect of a construction from the XVII-XVIII centuries.
The oldest vestiges can be found in the north façade, at the base of the master tower, quadrangular, where the vestibule is still visible, made of semicircular arches. Also noteworthy are the late Gothic windows, which correspond to the restoration carried out during the 16th century.
