The nucleus of the Castle of Ampurdán, formerly denominated Llaneres, was frontier position of the county of Ampurias opposite the county of Gerona, of real dominion, and Bisbal, of episcopal dominion. The castle was built as a defensive site for the southern sector of the county in the late thirteenth century by Count Ponce V of Ampurias and given in fief to Guillem de Vilagut in the year 1301.
From the first years of the 15th century until the end of the 18th century the lords of the castle were the Margarit.
The fortress is a large house with an old square tower and the rest made the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. It has however, Gothic elements taken advantage of. It is a large building, which consists of two bodies at right angles, and retains few elements of the original work, as it currently offers the whole aspect of a construction from the XVII-XVIII centuries.
