Els Gavarres. A large wooded mass of bristlecone and sureres (a type of woodland) covers the peaks that make up this extensive massif.

The Gavarres massif, in the north of the Catalan coastal mountain range, occupies an extensive area between the counties of Baix Empordà and El Girones. It is a well-differentiated geological formation, which rises up in the north of the Empordà, to the south of the valley of Cèrcol and to the south-west of the Selva plain. In the east, the counterforts of the massif almost reach the sea.

The area was declared an Area of Natural Interest in 1992 and in 1998 different municipalities of the twenty that include part of the massif founded the Gavarres Consortium, responsible for the care and management of its potential resources, both natural and historical as well as tourist and leisure. With an altitude of only 537 metres above sea level.

It is almost entirely covered by wooded areas, occasionally skirted by the occasional isolated farmhouse. The characteristic woodland, typically Mediterranean, is the alzinar, with great importance also of the surera, although the fires, the exploitation of the wood and the human depopulation, as well as the abandonment of these agricultural activities, have made that the pinewoods have advanced in extension.
